Research by LayerX suggests that one in three workers who utilize GenAI technologies, also communicate sensitive information. Security teams have been working to solve this data exfiltration vulnerability ever since ChatGPT tumultuously invaded our lives in November 2022. Yet, thus far the conventional strategy has been to either "allow all" or "block all", i.e enable the usage of GenAI without any security guardrails, or prevent the use completely.

This strategy is particularly unproductive since either it opens the gates to danger without any effort to safeguard company data, or puts security above commercial advantages, with organizations missing out on the productivity improvements. The first step is determining and mapping which of your data needs security. Not all data should be shared—business strategies and source code, for sure. But publicly accessible information on your website may securely be put into ChatGPT.

The second step is defining the amount of restriction you'd want to put on workers when they try to paste such sensitive material. This might mean full-blown blocking or merely notifying them ahead. Alerts are beneficial because they assist teach workers on the relevance of data hazards and foster autonomy, so employees may make the option on their own based on a balance between the sort of data they're inputting and their need.
